First Friday Poughkeepsie Celebrates Community, Art, Music at November’s Friendsgiving Event

Poughkeepsie, NY- First Friday Poughkeepsie is a city-wide celebration held on the first Friday of every month from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. when eateries and shops stay open late, pop-up shops line the streets and music fills the air. On Friday, November 3 at Mural Square on Main Street in Poughkeepise, event sponsors and organizers have planned a very special celebration. Presented in partnership by Rhinebeck Bank, LCS Companies, and R.L. Baxter Building Corporation, November’s First Friday will be a festival of community, music, food and art.

Music and Dance:
Queen City Dance will demonstrate hip hop dance moves while dancers from la Galaguetza will present a traditional Oaxacan dance performance in celebration of Dia De Los Muertos. The Poughkeepsie Step Team will also perform an exciting dance routine. Live music is a staple of First Friday events and in November two local bands will take the stage: The Warp/The Weft and the Robert Cahill Band. The First Friday DJ, DJ Smitty will keep the crowd entertained before and after the live music and several acoustic acts will be performing on the streets.

Food:
With cooler weather comes comfort food and First Friday is serving up chili! In addition to a wide range of menu offerings, local restaurants will be participating in a chilli cook off and event attendees will be the judge! Samples ($1 each) will be given and taste-testers will cast votes for their favorites in several categories. Winners will be announced at the end of the event. For a list of participating vendors and more information visit www.firstfridaypk.com.

Community Partnerships:
A major focus of the First Friday initiative is on the community and collaboration. To exemplify this, the event will feature a Community Quilt. “We join together Peace by Piece” is a handmade quilt that attendees will be able to sign their family name on a square at the First Friday information booth. Another way this event is bringing people together is by partnering with FoodStock. FoodStock is an annual event that raises money and food for the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, and other non profit organizations that aid in food shortages. Attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable item to the First Friday information table. For each item donated, a raffle ticket will be entered to win a fall gift basket from Barton Orchards.

The Village of Scarsdale is proud to host "Farmers in the 'Dale." A brand new weekday pop-up farmers market in the heart of Scarsdale. Village Manager, Stephen M. Pappalardo said, "I am pleased the Village is re-introducing a farmers market in Scarsdale’s Village Center after a four year absence. We look forward to providing patrons fresh locally grown produce and other unique options while providing another opportunity for our residents and neighbors to visit Scarsdale and frequent our wonderful local businesses."

Corinna Makris, owner of Village Green Markets and manager of the Peekskill Farmers Market, has been retained as market manager for the pop-up market. "I'm excited to be a part of this new market," Ms Makris said, "Farms and other food vendors have been asking for weekday markets as a new opportunity to connect with customers. The Scarsdale Village Center features many fine small business owners and we're thrilled to be a part of this vibrant shopping area."

Jane Veron, CEO The Acceleration Project (TAP), and member of the Scarsdale Village Board of Trustees, has been working closely with Ms Makris coordinating a marketing campaign.

The market will feature local farms from within a 250 mile radius including an organic option. Other foods to be found are bakeries offering a variety of breads and sweet treats (including non-GMO, and organic), a specialty cheesemonger, honey from a beekeeper based in Verplanck, Hudson Valley maple syrup, and ready-to-eat prepared Middle Eastern foods from Amal Rabadi, owner of Irvington Delight. More vendors, including businesses owned by Scarsdale residents, are being confirmed now, and a full list of vendors will be announced soon.

The Scarsdale Farmers Market is a pilot program operating Thursdays, from noon until 7:00 p.m., in Boniface Circle. After this pop-up market event ends, the Village will gather feedback from consumers and merchants, and then determine if the market will return for a full season in beginning in May 2018.

Farmers Market in Boniface Circle noon-7PM
Cocktail Hour Live Jazz with Alexis Cole 4PM-6PM
