Roadside Clean up Brings out the Best in Everyone

Alternative Halloween. Gary Smith, President of Kiwanis Newburgh led a team of 16 high school students from Cornwall and Newburgh down traffic-heavy Temple Hill Rd. on Saturday morning, October 31st. The kids put on latex gloves and grabbed orange bags and began filling them with empty water bottles and granola bar wrappers at 9AM. "It's a much healthier America," Smith joked.

The students come out every year ahead of Veteran's Day to clean up the roadside area surrounding the Purple Heart Museum located at 374 Temple Hill Rd. Key club captains Regina Hines (Cornwall Key Club) and Sandy Baines (NFA Key Club) as well as Frank Gerbes (Kiwanis) were there to supervise. "These kids get it," said Smith. "They know what it takes to make the world a better place."
