Do You Need a Blog If You Want to Be a Writer?
I often dream that things I have worked hard and fought for are being torn from me. I am always relieved when I wake up and realize it was just my subconscious banging on my brain, reminding me to seize the day, every. single. day. There is honor in the struggle.
I recently witnessed a debate that wanted to know if you have to have a blog if your career goals are to be a writer. There was a flurry of responses, most of them slamming blogs and their writers for uncareful editing. I think it's funny. I believe if you are a writer, then you should write to your heart's content. That means that you probably won't get paid right away if at all, and you will most likely start out doing other things to supplement your income which means your free time will have to be dedicated to your craft. And, you won't mind because you love doing it and the experiences of everyday inspire you to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and that means you can make some things up as you go. Including words and irregular punctuation. Because, blog entries are not cover letters that you're sending to a potential employer. They're a place to release your desire for self-expression, and that is your right!
If you are getting paid by a publisher to build content, then yes, there are rules! But, blogging? Come on, people! Focus on what makes you happy. The rest will fall into place.
