The 7 storefronts at 318 Bloomingrove Tpke. contain a neighborhood legacy dating back 22 years. The walls of the plaza echo with the sound of meaningful customer service, the glass panels of the front door are smudged with years of excited prints from small fingers. Parents, tutors and teachers have frequented the shop several decades over in search of everything from work books and tri-fold poster board to toys and treats like Beanie Babies. A few of Ariel's patrons travel far distances to make use of the laminating machine—$1/ft—the best deal for 50 square miles.
Store manager Samantha Fulin has been standing behind the counter for 8 years and even remembers visiting the store as a little girl herself. The teacher in waiting is certified in grades 1-6 and Special Education. The store has been a haven for her and a great resource to customers who know they can special order things they need and expect the best in learning materials in endless stock.
Now, pieces of a well thought out collection are waiting to be pulled off of the shelves at discounted rates up to 75% off in a sort-of 'everything must go' situation. The store plans to close it's doors permanently sometime next month. Actual discount 50% - 75% off and all sales are final.

Factors like a noticeable shift to internet based businesses, budget cuts in the district and job disintegration in the schools may be contributing factors to the stores decline according to Fulin. But, for a few short weeks those few dollars will stretch much further for school staff and parents thanks to the everything-must-go markdowns. And we mean everything. The rugs, the toys the gifts - everything - hot off the shelves and then, eventually even the shelves will be hauled away. You hear that person opening up a business? Shelves for sale...
Hopscotch Rug $25 o.b.o.
As is common with this type of shut-down the personal touches that make small independently owned businesses well-loved will be missed. In Ariel's Child thoughtful components like the recycled book shop - a Mommy exchange place for literature - will last in the memories of those who used it. Thankfully, the tutoring business that's been operating out of the space will continue to accept new clients and company owner Helen Bunt will continue to operate her Butterhill Day School program.
If you go expect to find some great products for school-aged children Pre-K to Grade 8 and some cute gifts. A hand-full of school supplies ($1-$10) are in stock and available at the same very discounted rates as the Melissa and Doug non-toxic wooden cradle (originally $35). Teacher discounts will not be applicable. 318 Blooming Grove Tpke (Rt 94)New Windsor, NY 12553565-2235Hours : Wed - Fri 11 a - 5p/Sat 11a - 3p Photographs by Jay Timberger
