Cupcake-War Winner Crowned at Festival
Fishkill, NY: Move over Red Velvet, there's a new fan-favorite in town! Pat Roza's baked-with-love Mocha Hazelnut Cupcake were frosted in first-place conquest in the cupcake wars extravaganza hosted by k104 on Sunday.. Preliminary on-air rounds over airwaves left listeners feeling hungry, but Sunday's cupcake festival was baked hot and gooey in the middle with sunshine and confectionery greatness.
K104.7 has been riding the cupcake train since the single-serving desserts hit the peak of consumer interest in 2011. The second-annual festival anchored by k104's prominent morning show cast and local celebrity judges featured the singe-serving cake sensations in abundance. The festival called for a total shut-down on main st. in the Village of Fishkill that allowed for an influx of thousands of dessert lovers.
Nearly a dozen bakers set-up their savory bounties with quantities into the thousands to accommodate the crowds that rolled in from 1pm -5pm - sharing their wares by the dozen and creating a vortex for main st. businesses that left lines out the door for most. There were banana split cupcakes, Italian rainbow cupcakes, keylime cupcakes, German chocolate cupcakes, raspberry chocolate cupcakes, margarita cupcakes, strawberry shortcake cupcakes... you get the idea.
Center stage was fixed with a community-voting system set-up for categorical judgingin a several divisions including best appearance, people's choice and best overall..
This second-annual cupcake festival was made possible by TEG federal credit union, Dutchesscars.com and Jonna Spilbore Law. The $1000 prize money will help an outstanding baker jump-start their cupcake business and the winning cupcake will be on the menu on Torches on the Hudson Restaurant and Bar for one month.

What has replaced the deep desire that previously accompanied red velvet? Junk Food Favorites: Mina Zanzarella's Chocolate caramel filled caramel confection is a great example.
I happened upon Mina's richly chocolate cupcake with Carmel paradise reserves flowing from the center topped by childhood favorite candybar Milky Way and finished off with a saucy plate presentation ($4.25). Mina's cupcakes were voted best in the Hudson Valley 2011 and can now be purchased at the Tomato Cafe (since 2010) Main St. Fishkill. I enjoyed front window seating with great views of the festival and the pedestrians enjoying the sights and sound a of spring event season getting off to an amazing start.
Main street businesses were saturated by event overflow allowing for a great happenstance of discovering new local venues as if for the first time.
If you missed this one, don't worry! Gardiner's famous cupcakes festival is scheduled for Saturday May 18th at Wrights Farm. Amateur cupcake makers from around the Hudson Valley will be judged in such categories as: Best Decorated cupcake; Best Tasting cupcake; Best Tasting Boylan Soda cupcake and Most Creative cupcake.
It will be the 5th Gardiner Cupcake Festival also called the sweetest day of the year.
