Earth Speaks: Paintings and Jewelry by Rebecca Hart
The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel.
Straightaway the ideas flow in upon me, directly from God.
Artists have enduringly contemplated the connection between the creative and the divine from the beginning of time. Painter, Rebecca Hart makes this her daily work. And it can be seen in her debut art show Earth Speaks opening at Antonia's Studio 4 on June 3rd.
Hart grew up in the studio of renowned Provincetown painter Romanos Rizk, who would provide an early education in the arts for her. She would later go on to study art at SUNY Purchase. Following her studies she was an assistant to prominent artist Michael Mapes. At Purchase she would also explore her spirituality through academic research. Her study of Shamanism, Buddhism, Qabbalah and other esoteric traditions are apparent in her work and perhaps even more so, in the process of creating it.
Hart is an intuitive painter, not planning but allowing her work to reveal itself to her. A large part of that is cultivating a practice of mindfulness and meditation. By quieting the mind, she's able to let go of her own thoughts and listen to what is being asked of her. Through her practice, Hart is able to connect to a spiritual tide, which moves her to create. Often her paintings come to her psychically, as though channeled, both waking and in dream.
Hart often talks about “painting with light”, that with her large brushes and bright colors, in each stroke her spirit casts a positive healing energy to her subject. In Earth Speaks, Hart invites the earths energy to speak through her. Here, you find a very politically outspoken artist, who uses her work to invite healing energy into adverse circumstances.
Hart too finds inspiration in the spirit of her peers. “Artists influence one another by working side by side,” Hart tells us. In Earth Speaks Hart is accompanied by live music, films, and dance from award winning artists local to the Hudson Valley. A space will also be provided for making art on the spot. Supplies include watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, pens and pencils. Adults and children are welcome to join in the creative experience.
Hart tells us, “when you listen the earth will speak to you.” It is clear that spirit lives within her and her work is the visual song of her soul.
