Happy Pi Day!

Does anyone know what today is?  It's not the Ides of March because that day is tomorrow. Not St. Patrick's Day -- that's happening Thursday. 311 day was last week (the ultimate concert experience) and first day of spring is still around the corner. No! Today is March 14, or as those of you who are in school, remember this day from school, or read this fine publication every year, you know that today is Pi Day!

Yes, March 14, or 3.14 mathematically, is celebrated by those who love math. There are even those who return to school to use math in creative ways.  The local engineering society has been going into Cornwall High School every October for several years to show students how math can be used in their careers.  Many of the volunteers are Civil Engineers, and they talk about roads and bridges.  They bring along fun activities for the kids to try, such as the materials needed to build their own bridge using macaroni and marshmallows.

Some Engineers from West Point make the trip too, and have some great stories about setting up temporary roads and bridges which, when their job is done, require removal as well.  Many classrooms have mathematical equations up all year.

People also like to celebrate using Pi type objects, such as making and then eating types of Pie or cakes or anything else they can think of.  Pied Piper Pies in Highland Falls is running a special today. Cutie Pies are $3.14 - check them out
