Life, Liberty Street and the Pursuit of Happiness
Friendly neighborhood tea shop is the latest in a line of charismatic stores to open it's doors on Liberty Street, inviting in the sweet winds of change for the better.
LiberTea Shoppe (89 Liberty St, Newburgh) is home to homemade pastries, gourmet sandwich selections, and a modestly priced breakfast and lunch menu. But, their specialty is the genuine invite they're extending to you to come and sit and steep in a hot pot of picture-perfect loose-leaf tea.
Honey oak tables and Mom’s kitchen curtains will make you feel right at home at the cafe inspired by English Tea time. Americana classics like the Belgian Waffle breakfast with whipped cream ($5.95) and Egg and Cheese on Croissant ($3.25) are a great way to start any day. Build Your Own Wrap ($7.50) is a fun option for particulars who will take comfort in a variety of cold-cut choices like Pastrami and Pulled Pork in combination with Onion and Pepper toppers with Pesto and Hot Ranch Accents.
The Shoppe is a vessel for decadent confections—locally made pastries are delivered daily from a host of area vendors. Scones and cupcakes line the counter ($3+). I walked in to Cherry Wheat Cupcakes by “Cwupcakes”. The melodic moist chocolate cake with cherry essence was topped by honey frosting swelling with the baked in flavor of robust Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - - silk and sin with a cherry on top.
And then there's TEA. No shortage of caffeine free, Hot Cinnamon Spice, Black and Organic mixtures as well as a host of unlisted blends for any hot beverage connoisseur.
Modestly priced, LiberTEA Shoppe is a nostalgic venture for owner Barbara Hembree-Hernandez who is reliving the afternoon and late night tea sessions she shared with three generations of women in her family. Her sister, Laura Keys jumps in with the assist whenever she can, fond of those same memories and just as committed to the cause.

Hand-picked ingredients are essential to the Natual Wellness factor of tea drinking which ultimately inspired Barbara to open shop. The cafe owner doubles as a physical therapist and is sensitive to healthy choices. Black tea infused with deep citrus flavor and notes of lemon brewed for an average of 3.5 minutes create a unique tea experience in the House Blend.
The café is a great place to visit. Just a hop, skip and jump from the revival efforts rooted in the South East corner of Ann and Liberty streets where the intimate music venue the Wherehouse, espresso destination Café Macchiato and Ann St. Art Gallery have come together to insist on a block party. Rumors of bad behavior in the infamous city of Newburgh can not be heard over the sound of progress on this prominent city block. LiberTea Shoppe 89 Liberty St.Newburgh, NY 845-527-5344
