Morehead Honda Collecting Donations for Family Affected by House Fire
Town of Newburgh: Joel Fuentes, Meghan Bowen and their 4 sons narrowly escaped an all-consuming house fire early Tuesday morning. k104 broke the story to us over the morning show news waves announcing that the family was in need of clothing and personal items in wake of the loss.
Morehead Honda - boutique family car dealership in Newburgh (and also Honda of Kingston) - jumped at the chance to help and immediately established a drop-off point for donation items to benefit the family in-need. Showing support for the community is part of their time-honored philosophy- we last reported Morehead's participation in Just Off Broadway, Inc's It's a Wonderful Life radio show to benefit Juvenile Diabetes. The locally owned and operated third generation car dealership broke sales records every month in 2012 and are best known for the family-like atmosphere (they're closed on Sundays) which caters to both employee and customer happiness.
We stopped by Morehead on Friday February 1, 2013 to pick up some donation items. We delivered them directly to the Meghan and Joel who met us at their shell of a home in the town of Newburgh. The fire - thought to be electrical - ravaged their home in what seemed like minutes starting in the living room and working it's way up the stairs towards the family asleep in a bedroom. The parents facilitated the exit of all four boys through a fourth story window. The parents are exhausted and sad - family pet Chachi didn't make it out of the house, but thankful for the community support they've been receiving and happy to be alive.
The Fuentes family has lived in the house for only 13 months. Unfortunately a loophole in their insurance is leaving them with little hope for total replacement of lost items. Due to a buy-out of the policy some of their coverage may have been lost. They are facing the possibility of having to replenish the entire contents of their home when they hopefully return to it in 5-6 months. What they're asking for now is not clothes or food - K Mart - Meghan's place of employment - stepped up at the local and regional level to buy some necessities for the family. Due to limited storage capabilities and the insurance policy lapse what they are most in need of at this time is gift cards - for gas, furniture, household items, etc.
They are not turning away donations, whatever they don't need they will gratefully pass along. They are humbled by the outpouring of love and support they've been receiving and are taking solace in the love of their four boys ages 14, 13, 11 and 9.
"THANK YOU so much for all your efforts. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and help available and also a little unsure of what the next step is. It really means a lot to the family to know theres so many people willing to help."
